ABOUT
THESE PICTURES
WHERE
All these photos were taken around the city of Penticton, B.C., Canada
(see map). Penticton is bounded by two lakes, Okanagan Lake on the north
side, and Skaha Lake on the south side. In the winter, certain areas of
shoreline become wonderful jungles of ice, due to the ways the wind and
the waves hit them. These moments are short and rare since they are snowed
on or melt quickly, but when they occur these 'in-between' moments are
breathtaking. I have been photographing them for a few winters now.
HOW
It's a little dangerous; there is no safe ground to walk on, only a smooth,
uneven rolling surface of glare ice. Not many people venture out to try
the pictures. And when you lose your balance... there's only a slippery
ice-covered mound to grab on to... you basically flail around like a hilarious
cartoon character trying not to hit the ground. I've almost cracked a
bone or two in the name of getting these wonderful scenes on film.
I experiment with them during cloudy and clear skies, mornings to evenings,
looking for some unusual angle, light, and detail. I also expend effort
to not break any of the formations as I tromp over them, around, under,
anywhere high or low to get a nice shot.

as a magazine, business website, posters, for-sale cards, prints, then
please contact me for a simple licensing contract. You'll pay a small
one-time fee (or royalties if it is something based upon number of sales,
such as a print or poster), and will be provided with a quality copy of
the image/s you want to use. These website images are very small, and
are only 50% quality jpegs, so are not suitable for professional reproduction.
The original images are huge, and clear even as door-poster size images.
EQUIPMENT
and WEBSITE
I use a Nikon digital camera. 8 megapixels, 10x optical zoom.
All feature photos are unretouched; no cropping, filters, light effects;
I enjoy the purity of capturing a photo, concentrating on all the elements
right at the origin, and sending that original right to your eyes, unaltered. I wanted simple, spartan, elegant.
All photos and content on this website are copyright © 2007 Neil
Hansen.
CONTACT
You are welcome to contact me. If you send in comments, I will eventually
construct a 'comments' page. You can also inquire about licensing these
photos. If you yourself have a website with ice pictures, we can do a
'link trade', as I will eventually also set up a links page to other interesting
ice picture sites. I may also consider including pages on my site that
feature ice photos by others.
